At first glance, it seems odd to have such a glorious Gospel reading during Lent. Last Friday, at our parish lectionary-based Bible study, we noticed that, without context of month or season or year, Matthew places the Transfiguration "six days after" discussion of the Passion. The Lord, who would be stripped and crucified between two convicts is here a glorious "fashion statement" between two giants of faith. The Father, who would be silent, is here speaking.
The reading belongs in Lent because it shows the "other side" of the Crucifixion. (And it's fun to see somebody besides Catholics chatting with the saints. :) )
