How quickly analysis written a few weeks ago becomes obsolete. When the New Year was young, it still looked as if Titanic's box office records were uncatchable. But Avatar's stunning performance has defied analysis (mine, anyway) and is now the #1 movie in world history. The online version(s) of the article should be adjusted accordingly!

I am ever unimpressed with box office records. Until somebody corrects for inflation, what difference does it make? Is the claim here, for example, that because the latest boiler took in more money than, say, Gone with the Wind, it is a bigger social phenom than the 1939 classic?

In raw dollars, my salary dwarfs my grandfather's (a physician and surgeon); big deal.
