Fr. Robert Barron offers some cinematic and theological reflections after seeing Avatar (mild spoilers alert!):
• "Avatar": An "unapologetically religious" movie (Dec. 30, 2009)
• "Avatar": An "unapologetically religious" movie (Dec. 30, 2009)
Yes it's religious in many ways but more romantacism meets Eco-Gaia-pantheism

Ross Douthat in National Review, after describing its visual wonders, says "It is, however, deeply stupid. Relentlessly stupid. Occasionally mindbogglingly stupid." The whole review is here:

We need to stop supporting people that are using all forms of media to destroy the truths about God and His Church on earth.
Cameron is a dangerous fellow, like Dan Brown and Oprah and many others.
Cameron's sham regarding finding Christ's tomb, shows his disbelief and disunity for Jesus and His Church.
First of all the title "Avatar" should make everyone run away - for it connotes the Hindu meaning of reincarnation.
Catholics and Christians should not even be saying or spelling it.
Notice that Cameron released the movie as we were all about to celebrate Christmas - the True Incarnation.
The movie seems to be assisting the viewer, especially the ones with poor catechesis, to consider the possibilities of the New Age "religious" way of being. And as all other Cameron movies, clothing optional is a treat.
Usually, when a movie, book, music, is produced that aids the enemy to persuade society to betray God, there is a consistent false spiritual thread that has "blessed" the work. Let's look carefully at the design of the blue Navi people.
So, let's stop supporting these persuasive people of the media, which satan has much influence over.
Be strong... we can miss seeing the "beautiful visuals". Penance is a good thing,
Let's no longer be lured like weaklings.
As soldiers, let's try our best to restore this broken world.
And I'm not delighted that a priest is encouraging the viewing of this film.
He should be reminding us to pray for the conversion of James Cameron.
