Why does Oregon have 78 different uniform combinations?

According to this 2006 article, UO had almost 400 uniform combinations. Crazy, yes. Then-coach Mike Bellotti said "the eclectic uniforms draw national attention and help recruiting efforts." They certainly do get attention, and it is either very negative or very positive. But there's no doubt it helps set the Ducks apart, for better or worse. Some of the hate, however, is a bit over the top. College football is a business (I'm stating a fact; I'm not saying I like the fact), and UO has figured out ways to grow the business.
