Magister Christianus

Although he puts the words into the mouth of his interlocutor Boso in _Cur Deus Homo_, I have always loved Anselm's words, "Sicut rectus ordo exigit ut profunda Christianae fidei prius credamus, quam ea praesumamus ratione discutere, ita negligentia mihi uidetur, si, postquam confirmati sumus in fide, non studemus quod credimus intelligere." "Just as the right order of things demands that we first believe the deep matters of the Christian faith before we begin to examine them with reason, so it seems negligence to me if, after we have been confirmed in the faith, we do not strive to understand what it is we believe." This is an eloquent statement about how to live through both faith and reason, fides et ratio, and it reminds of Pope John Paul II's encyclical of that same name. It is no surprise that a faithful intellect like that of Pope Benedict XVI's would have such words to say about St. Anselm, and what wonderful words they were.
