... that isn't the same thing as being a “Catholic school”. His comments were posted today on Our Sunday Visitor's blog, "Daily Take":
Actually, the bishops have spoken. Several years ago, as a group, they
formally resolved that Catholic colleges and universities should not
invite politicians with pro-abortion records to speak on their
campuses, nor should these schools give awards or honorary degrees to
such political figures.
Nevertheless, the President will not be the first such political figure to be lauded by an American university with a Catholic heritage. Not that long ago, the University of San Francisco, founded by the Jesuits in 1855, honored Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, whose pro-abortion views also dismay many Catholics.
How can these schools get by with ignoring the bishops’ resolution, clearly and firmly stated as it was?
To understand the situation, it first is better to characterize these schools as having a “Catholic heritage” rather than as being “Catholic schools”. There is no comparison between them and the local parochial school.
This does not ignore certain Catholic symbols, or practices, on their campuses. Rather, it recognizes important facts.

Speaking of what bishops can and cannot do, according to canon law, in such situations, read this post by Dr. Ed Peters.

Something is not making much sense unless it has to do with Universities and not lower schools because the Bishop, or it was my understanding, does have say whether or not you can keep that "Catholic" in your title or not. Now, it is interesting that maybe they answer directly to Rome, or not. This article was informative especially the fact of who runs it and how it ended up that way. Of course, a modest proposal would be to say "Sure. Go ahead. On my way out I am just taking the "Catholic" out of the name. And when and if you want it back, call me-signed the Bishop". I think the Bishops do have more power than we think they do, it is just when and if they are going to exercise it and how.
