"Emotional vampirism!" Jonah's Golberg's words are accurate: Since the press could not suck the life of out of the Amish in Lancaster after that tragedy, they moved on! I can't recall seeing many stories about the forgiveness of the Amish in the aftermath!

I'm ambivalent myself. On one hand, it might have been useful to try to help us get inside the mind of a mass murderer, particularly those who want to understand both the worst and best of human nature. On the other hand, too much coverage does become too much coverage.
