Rev. Louis Bouyer: Gruff, brilliant, and prolific

The "Sources Chrétiennes~Renewal in Catholic Thought" blog has posted a bio of the late Rev. Louis Bouyer (1913-2004). Info about Bouyer's life is hard to find, so I was surprised to learn how gruff and difficult Bouyer apparently could be:

After his ordination as a priest of the French Oratory, Bouyer taught humanities at Juilly... He was then offered a position in the history of dogma and of spirituality at the Institut Catholique. The novelty of his positions, together with his sometimes rude manner, earned him the opposition of his Jesuit colleagues, especially of Father--later Cardinal--[Jean] Danielou. Violent intellectual polemics prompted him to leave the "Catho" and France.

One reason this surprises me is because Bouyer's books tend be very charitable and balanced in tone and perspective. This is especially evident, I think, in The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism and The Word, Church, and Sacraments in Protestantism and Catholicism, which largely eschew polemics while often praising the positive elements Bouyer found in classical Protestantism (Bouyer was a former Protestant pastor).

Perhaps the personal gruffness is why modern liturgical theologians still seem very harsh toward Bouyer. I've noticed this especially among some of the French ones.

Rather late here...

I too was surprised to find out about Bouyer's hot temper, and that this apparently caused some strife within "the circle", especially with Danielou. Unfortunate.

If the Communio journals weren't so behind right now, I might have some other information out...
