Church Fathers and Teachers
From Leo The Great to
Peter Lombard
Pope Benedict XVI
After
meditating on the Apostles and then on the Fathers of the early Church,
as seen in his earlier works Jesus, the Apostles and the Early
Church and Church Fathers, Pope Benedict XVI devoted his
attention to the most influential Christian men from the fifth through
the twelfth centuries. In his first book, Church Fathers,
Benedict began with Clement of Rome and ended with Saint Augustine. In
this volume, the Holy Father reflects on some of the greatest
theologians of the Middle Ages: Benedict, Anselm, Bernard, and Gregory
the Great, to name just a few. By exploring both the lives and the ideas
of the great popes, abbots, scholars and missionaries who lived during
the fall of the Roman Empire and the rise of Christendom, Pope Benedict
XVI highlights the key elements of Catholic dogma and practice that
remain the foundation stones not only of the Roman Catholic Church but
of Christian society itself. This book is a wonderful way to get to know
these later Church Fathers and Teachers and the tremendous spiritually
rich patrimony they have bequeathed to us.
Edith Stein and Companions
On the Way to Auschwitz
Fr.
Paul Hamans
On the same summer day in 1942, Saint Teresa
Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) and hundreds of other Catholic Jews
were arrested in Holland by the occupying Nazis. One hundred thirteen
of those taken into custody, several of them priests and nuns, perished
at Auschwitz and other concentration camps. They were murdered in
retaliation for the anti-Nazi pastoral letter written by the Dutch
Catholic bishops.
Several of the witnesses chronicled here had already suffered for their faith in Christ before falling victim to Hitler’s “Final Solution”, enduring both rejection by their own people, including family members, and persecution by the so-called Christian society in which they lived. Among these were those who, also like Sister Teresa Benedicta, perceived the cross they were being asked to bear and accepted it willingly for the salvation of the world. Illustrated

Paul
VI
The Pope in the Tempest
Pope Paul VI was a
leader in the Catholic Church as a priest, bishop, cardinal and pope
through one of the most difficult periods in its history—from the
Fascist regime and World War II to the constitution of the Italian
Republic, from the Second Vatican Council to the protests and the
terrorist attacks of the 1960s and 1970s.
This exciting and insightful film covers fifty years of history that changed the Catholic Church and the world. Paul VI: The Pope in the Tempest is a story that draws emotion and lessons from history itself, dramatically mixing stunning reconstructions and real film footage.
St. Giuseppe Moscati
Doctor to the Poor
Giuseppe
Moscati, “the holy physician of Naples,” was a medical doctor and
layman in the early 20th century who came from an aristocratic family
and devoted his medical career to serving the poor. He was also a
medical school professor and a pioneer in the field of biochemistry
whose research led to the discovery of insulin as a cure for diabetes.
Moscati regarded his medical practice as a lay apostolate, a ministry to his suffering fellowmen. Before examining a patient or engaging in research he would place himself in the presence of God. He encouraged his patients to receive the sacraments. Giuseppe Moscati died in 1927 at 46 yrs old, was beatified in 1975 and declared a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1987. His feast day is November 16.
