The University of San Francisco has dropped abortion provisions...

... that were originally in the new student health care program. The Catholic Key had reported on Wednesday about the abortion provision for student attending the Jesuit university and also provided some helpful background material in another post.

The Our Sunday Visitor blog reported on it yesterday, and now has posted a response from Gary McDonald, AVP, Communications and Public Affairs at the University, stating:

It was not the University's intention to offer this coverage. USF supports the Catholic Church's views on the sanctity of life, at all stages, and we will remove this provision from our student healthplan. We regret this mistake, and we take full responsibility for not adequately reviewing the contract. We are grateful to those who brought this issue to our attention.

The fact Gary McDonald's statement referred to abortion as "voluntary termination of pregnancy" is...um...telling.

I also thank you for reporting such positive news about a liberal Jesuit college located in a very liberal city. Could the tide be turning for this school?

Dan-- Think FOCA. If that act is passed w/the votes of Catholic politicians & if the bishops walk the walk instead of just talking the talk, you will see major repercussions, like politicians being refused Communion at the alter rail. You might also see the weeding out of the cafeteria catholics, which can only be considered a good thing for the American Church. Yes, it will shrink in size; but remember, a pruned plant grows back even stronger & more beautiful. I have hope!
