It is sad that both these fellows are completely unaware of the "Dialog Mass" format licensed by HH Pius XII (? maybe John XXIII) in the late 1950's, wherein the faithful not only vocally sang or spoke the "et cum spiritu..." and "amen" responses, but also sang/spoke ALL the parts of the Ordinary AND the Our Father.

It's possible that they were in a benighted parish--

I am really glad that Carl Olson represents one of the other rites, besides the Roman. I really do wonder what these people who are so very critical of the older form of the Roman rite answer when confronted with the very old liturgies of the Eastern Church. Would they banish and dismiss the celebration of the heavenly liturgy because of the posture of the priest?

I never hear their point of view on that issue.

"It’s easy enough to see where this is going: same God, same church, but separate camps, each with an affinity for vernacular or Latin, John XXIII or Benedict XVI. Smart, devout, ambitious Catholics — ecclesial young Republicans, home-schoolers, seminarians and other shock troops of the faith — will have their Mass. The rest of us — a lumpy assortment of cafeteria Catholics, guilty parents, peace-’n’-justice lefties, stubborn Vatican II die-hards — will have ours. We’ll have to prod our snoozing pewmates when to sit and stand; they’ll have to rein in their zealots."

If that isn't ample reason for what Benedict XVI has done and still wants to do, I don't know what is.
However, I would suggest that the Holy Father knows that the Motu Proprio is not the solution to the underlying problem. In fact he's been working on the long-term solution since he became Pope. It is contained in his "MESSAGE OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE OF THE WORLD ON THE OCCASION OF THE XXIII WORLD YOUTH DAY, 2008" which is at the Vatican website.

And, disappointed as Lawrence Downes might be, I think the Pope is a zealot for Jesus Christ.
