He's surprised. But why?

Greg Kandra spent nearly 25 years working for CBS News and is now an editor for "Couric & Co.," the CBS News blog. Kandra is Catholic and will soon be ordained a permanent deacon. In a blog entry titled "The Last Acceptable Prejudice," Kandra comments on the John Edwards' Catholic-Bashing Bloggers Fiasco:

But the episode has drawn attention to an issue that strikes close to my own life – and the lives of about 60 million other Americans. It involves a particularly insidious form of bigotry, and the nagging suspicion that there is one remaining permissible prejudice in America. It is anti-Catholicism.

I say this as a person who has spent a quarter of a century working in network news, and as a man who, in three months, will become an ordained member of the Catholic clergy. (On May 19th I’ll be ordained a permanent deacon.) Straddling these two worlds, I’ve seen my share of controversies, scandals and public outcries over the Church and how it is treated by both the public and the media. But the Edwards debacle is something I never quite anticipated.

I would not have believed that a candidate for President (and a previous candidate for Vice President) would have hired a writer, Melissa McEwan, who had described President Bush’s supporters as a “wingnut Christofacist base.” I did not think a person of Edwards seriousness and experience would condone welcoming onto his payroll a second writer, Amanda Marcotte, who wrote on her blog “the Catholic church is not about to let something like compassion for girls get in the way of using the state as an instrument to force women to bear more tithing Catholics.” This is also the writer who wrote: “What if Mary had taken Plan B after the Lord filled her with his hot, white, sticky Holy Spirit? You’d have to justify your misogyny with another ancient mythology.” (And then there’s this pearl of wisdom: One thing I vow here and now–you motherf*** who want to ban birth control will never sleep. I will f*** without making children day in and out and you will know it and you won’t be able to stop it. Toss and turn, you mean, jealous motherf****. I’m not going to be “punished” with babies. Which makes all your efforts a failure. Some non-procreating women escaped. So give up now. You’ll never catch all of us. Give up now.”)

I certainly would not have imagined that a serious candidate for President would have kept on his payroll people who write things so blatantly, outrageously hateful towards a particular religion.

Am I the only one puzzled, if I might politely say so, by the striking naivety of Kandra's remarks? Or am I just that cynical about politicians, the MSM, and left-wing bloggers? Is there really anything in Edwards' resume or past indicating he would be above tacitly condoning (by not firing the two bloggers) the last acceptable prejudice? Come to think of it, Katie Couric, who does this or that over at CBS News, has shown that she's not above implying that orthodox Catholics are anti-Semitic. 

It's not as though the MSM has stepped up the plate regarding the Edwards' story. As Brent Bozell has noted, most news accounts have purposefully been vague about what the two bloggers wrote:

Edwards' friends in the media responded in classic fashion. They were slow to notice, and when they did, there were no Holy Spirit sperm jokes to be found. Instead, reporters vaguely referred to "sometimes vulgar and intemperate writings." The average American has no idea how offensive Marcotte's writings were.

As an example, CNN ran an early story carrying an on-screen graphic noting there were accusations these bloggers were (in quotes) "anti-Catholic." This is a bit like suggesting that the KKK is merely "anti-black."

There were refreshing exceptions. Some media liberals were not just bothered, but disgusted by the comments. Kudos to columnist Mark Shields and reporter Nina Totenberg, who decried Marcotte and Edwards on the talk show "Inside Washington." Shields spoke for many Americans when he said, "If she had written similarly about a Jewish person, an Islamic person, a gay or a lesbian, she would be banished to the outer darkness." Amen.

So, why is someone at CBS so surprised? Just curious.

Now that he has rolled the rock over and seen the light (I have heard a rumor that CBS keeps their people in dark subterranean settings), Greg Kandra, when he becomes a permanent deacon, should ask his bishop if he can give a homily, or better yet, a series of homilies on Anti-Catholicism and the growing hegemony of aggressive dogmatic atheism in America. I am sure he will get a vigorously supportive green light.

This is rather naive, especially concerning Edwards. Wasn't he tacitly blaming the so-called religious life when he talked about how Christopher Reeve's could have rose up and walked if ESCR was Federally approved.

I am a news junkie since my undergraduate days at Berkeley in the 1970s. While away from the Church a number of years, I lost any sense of how anti-religion the left and MSM(main stream media) truly is. I spent three years in Muslim Africa and learned an appreciation of that living faith, not just the political one we currently see, but those without undo Salafi/Wahabbi influence and interpretations. I have been in the Washington DC area for nearly 10 years and it is quite interesting to see the frequent anti-Catholic front page/or front section stories of the Washington Post. The realization that main stream politicians may hold an anti-Catholic view is not surprising; what is however is the number of In Name Only Catholic politicians which hold anti-Catholic positions starting with number three to the Presidency on down. Mitt Romney is looking pretty interesting right about now; what should we striving Catholics think about him as compared to the other better known pols out there?
