That's the title of an interview in the January 2005 issue of Catholic World Report. The interview is with J. Budziszewski, noted Evangelical author and associate professor in the departments of government and philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. Actually, it's now former Evangelical author, as Budziszewski and his wife entered the Catholic Church on Easter Sunday, 2004. I've read several of Budziszewski's books and had wondered if and when he'd become Catholic, in large part because of his strong defense and articulation of the natural law tradition (see, for example, his book Written On The Heart: The Case for Natural Law [InterVarsity Press]). Anyhow, it's a very intriguing interview and worth tracking down. Hopefully it will be availabe online at some point. If so, I'll make sure to post a link. In the meantime, if you've never read any of his work, check out his excellent article, "The Revenge of Conscience," published in First Things magazine.

Another very good book by Prof. Budziszewski is "What We Can't Not Know". He really develops the idea that conscience denied is what leads us further into the wilderness; that the "furies" of conscience drive us to break more and more with the "law written our hearts".

I didn't know he had joined the Church, but I'm not surprised, either, for some of the same reasons you'd mentioned, Carl.

Just what the church needs - another homophobic zealot who believes that morality is reducible to sexual (mis)conduct.
